In South Africa, 289 miners have been trapped in a gold mine since yesterday. A rescue operation has been launched to bring them out of the three-kilometer-deep mine.

The miners were working in the evening at the mine in Westonaria near Johannesburg. According to South African media, a lift was damaged by falling debris.

A spokesperson confirmed that everyone is safe and that the workers are being provided with food. No one was injured in the incident.

The mine owner, Subanye Stillwater, stated that a safety assessment is underway to hoist the miners to the surface. Photos from the mine show the men waiting for rescue.
